It was a friendly group made up of women with different degrees of fitness which I was glad for. The coach took us through our paces with a simple warm up session before going through the basics, being careful to make sure those of us who were a little more rusty took it easy to begin with and sympathetic to those with specific problems. The hour flew by with the session being fun and the body getting a thorough workout.

I thoroughly recommend it and as it’s nearby, the walk to the school itself can be a nice little warm up!

Officers from the Met Status Dogs Unit and Bruce Grove Safer Neighbourhoods Team, the borough lead on tackling dangerous dogs attended a flat in Highgate N6, in the early hours of the morning to carry out a warrant obtained under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Police seized two female dogs suspected to be pit-bulls.

A man was arrested on suspicion of possession of prohibited fighting dogs and taken to a north London police station. He has been bailed to return to police on 10 February pending examination of the dogs. Enquiries continue.

Bruce Grove Safer Neighbourhoods Team are leading Haringey’s response to dangerous dogs, after they became the first Safer Neighbourhoods team in the borough to have dangerous dogs set as a ward priority in response to concerns raised about dog behaviour in Lordship Recreation Ground and Downhills Park in Tottenham.

PC Kerry Davies, of Bruce Grove Safer Neighbourhoods Team, has been on attachment with the Met Status Dogs Unit which has helped her to gain an understanding of the initial stages of identifying possible prohibited breeds. She is Haringey’s dangerous dogs liaison officer and works with all 19 of the borough’s Safer Neighbourhoods Teams, response teams, dog handlers, the Met Status Dogs Unit, RSPCA and Haringey Council. Having one person operating as a single point of contact, helps the flow of information in order to deal with irresponsible owners wherever they live in the borough.

Bruce Grove Safer Neighbourhoods Team has been combining education with enforcement to tackle the issue of dangerous dogs and irresponsible dog ownership from every angle. Officers have been going into schools, parks and vets to help educate people about responsible dog ownership and encourage as many people as possible to report irresponsible and dangerous dog ownership to them.

Bruce Grove Safer Neighbourhoods Team Sergeant Matthew Casey, who leads on Haringey’s dangerous dog strategy, said:

“We need to encourage as many people as possible to report the ownership of dangerous dogs or irresponsible ownership to us. We investigate all sightings of suspected prohibited breeds and reports of irresponsible dog ownership.

“It is important to clarify that if people have inadvertently purchased a pit bull type dog, there are occasions where they may retain their pet, subject to strict conditions and registration. We can help people through this process.”

PC Kerry Davies, Haringey’s dangerous dogs liaison officer, said: “Haringey residents can be assured that if they report sightings of suspected prohibited animals, irresponsible or suspicious activity, we will investigate and where appropriate take action within the parameters of the law. We will draw on any resource possible to encourage responsible ownership and ensure the public are safe from dangerous dogs.”

The Sustainable Haringey Waste Group is meeting with Veolia managers early in the new year. Below are some things we’d like to hear about and discuss at the meeting.

 

1. Where else has Veolia introduced fortnightly waste collections and what has the result been? What are the main things they have learned from these other boroughs?

 

2. What sort of street audit will they be doing? We assume that they have details of the number of households (some houses have three or four flats). Do they have details of household size? Will they be checking the space available for the extra wheelie bins? Will they be assuming that every household wants a large (240 litre) green wheelie bin or are they offering the smaller (120 litre) size? Can people still get 120 litre size black wheelie bins? Are they offering households the option of sharing their wheelie bins which would reduce space pressure?

 

3. What will Veolia do to help people recycle food? Will there be publicity about the reduced price garden compost bins? Are the (well designed) big and small food containers still available? Will they publicise these food containers and how easy it is to get compostable bags for them?

 

4. What advice will they give re. nappies, cat litter, etc.

= Stay alert: be aware of what’s going on around you.

= Think ahead and plan your journey, avoiding deserted areas.

= Avoid carrying valuables if you don’t need them. = Avoid walking alone at night, and keep to well-lit main roads where possible.

= Avoid short cuts like alleyways, waste ground and wooded, bushy areas.. If you do walk through a park ensure you stay on well-lit, main paths where there are other people around.

= If you regularly go jogging or cycling, try to vary your route and time.

= It is always worth letting someone know where you are going, the route you intend to take and when you expect to return.

= Try to avoid wearing headphones – your ability to hear traffic, strangers or potential trouble is severely restricted.

= Be vigilant, if you are using your mobile phone stay alert to those around you.

= If you have a personal attack alarm it should be carried in your hand to use immediately if necessary.

= If you think someone is following you, check by varying your route – more than once if necessary – to see if the person follows. If you are still worried, get to the nearest place where there are other people and call the police.

A resident was mugged by two men in Russell Avenue late Thursday (20 Oct) evening. The men followed him from Turnpike Lane station and threatened to stab him if he didn’t hand over his mobile phone.

POLICE APPEAL – ROBBERIES AT FINSBURY PARK

Police are asking the public to be vigilant and appealing for information following Finsbury Park robberies Police are asking the public to be vigilant and appealing for witnesses and information following several recent late night robberies in the grounds of Finsbury Park. The most recent incident took place between about 0300 and 0330 hours on Saturday 15 October. The victim, a 39 year-old man, was sitting on a bench in the park, near the running track, on the Manor Road side of the park, when he was approached by a group of about five or six youths. The victim was told to empty his pockets and was hit over the head with a blunt metal object when he refused, causing a graze and swelling to his face. The suspects are believed to have made off empty handed. The victim made his way home to Hackney and called LAS who alerted police. The victim was taken to an east London hospital and discharged later that morning. The suspects are described as being male black youths, three aged in their late teens and two or three of younger appearance. On Sunday 2 October at about 2200 hours a 19 year-old man was robbed of his watch and cash in Finsbury Park near the exit on Endymion Road. The suspects are described as being two black men aged about 20 to 25 years and wearing dark clothing. On Saturday 8 October between about 0220 to 0230 hours a man in his 20s was robbed of his wallet phone and bag near the running track in Finsbury Park. The suspects are described as being two black men and two white men. One of the suspects is described as being a white man, approx 16-18 years old, athletic build, 5ft 9 inch to 5ft 11inch wearing a white tracksuit. The other suspects are described as being two black men and one other white man. Please be very sceptical of anything out of the ordinary and make further enquiries before taking any action and never send money. Remember if something seems suspicious or too good to be true it probably is.

There are various ways of checking if you are being targeted with an online, telephone or postal scam :

• You can put key details such as phone number or company name followed by word ‘scam’ into an internet search engine. If it is a scam there is a good chance someone will have put a warning here.
• If it is a well known company that is supposedly involved, contact the company by looking up their phone number online or via directory enquiries (do not use the number given on any documentation received with the suspected scam).
• Contact your local Trading Standards.

Examples of two recent scams that I have been informed have been experienced by our members:

1. Large parcels are delivered from an online retailer addressed correctly to the home owner/occupier, although the home owner/occupier has not ordered anything. A short while later someone will turn up at the door saying that there has been a mistake and the parcels need to be taken back, and they take the parcels away. Shortly after a letter will arrive in the post from the online retailer containing the details of the credit agreement the home owner/occupier had supposedly signed up to.

The way the scam works is that someone uses your name and address (presumably obtained from the phonebook or electoral roll or looking at letters in your rubbish) to order goods on credit from the retailer; they pay for next day delivery so that they know roughly when the goods will turn up; they call on you and remove the goods, pretending to be working for the retailer; and then the bill gets sent to you.

Therefore, if anyone turns up at the door asking for unexpectedly delivered goods to be handed over, one should not do so – contact the retailer instead.

2. A telephone call is received from what appears to be an Asian call centre. They claim that they are the support centre for your email service and that your account is causing errors on their server. They try to talk you into logging onto your computer on the pretence of downloading software to rectify the errors. Undoubtedly, the software they want installed on your computer will be spy or key-logging software which will give them complete access to your machine.

When challenged, the scammer will provide a very English name and London telephone number and, a reference to web site www.ammyy.com which seems to be a bona fide US internet provider. If you look do an internet search on ‘ammyy scam’ you will find many reports of from people who have encountered this scam or similar scams.

POSTAL SCAMS

Can you circulate this around especially as Xmas is fast approaching – it has been confirmed by Royal Mail. The Trading Standards Office is making people aware of the following scam:

A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a Premium rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize. If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £315 for the phone call. If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 020 7239 6655. For more information, see the Crime Stoppers website.

ANYONE LOOKING IN YOUR BINS?There have been incidents where people have been seen looking into dustbins on the estate. While recycling is encouraged the police are concerned that they may be looking for other things in our trash such as discarded documents containing personal information. If you come across people going through your bins, please contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team on 020 8721 2678.
